For those of us who reside in London and use the tubes on a daily basis there is an unspoken rule of etiquette that must be followed. Allowing people off of trains before alighting, standing to the right on escalators (although TfL tried to break that one recently to much furore) and of course not making eye contact with other tube users. These are all things that are simply accepted and continued without question. Imagine the consternation in the days leading up to Christmas when tube users on the northern line started noticing sprigs of mistletoe attached to the ceiling rails. What to do? Panic ensued as seasoned travellers were met with the dilemma of which rule to follow. Everyone knows that when stood under the mistletoe, couples must kiss but how can you do that when you are not allowed to even make eye contact much less physical contact with a perfect stranger! The result was predictably British in that great spaces were left on otherwise packed trains exactly underneath the mistletoe. No-one was brave or rebellious enough to stand under the offending greenery for fear of attracting unwanted attention. Awkward social problem solved. But there remained a mystery as to who placed it there in the first place?
